English Literature and Composition for Middle School includes the study of grammar, usage, spelling, written composition, public speaking, literature, and vocabulary. Students read and analyze a broad range of fiction and nonfiction and learn to express their own views through various written assignments including arguments, informative essays, narratives, and literary analyses. We explore plot, conflict, setting, point of view, theme, mood, tone, and style while reading a wide variety of short stories, plays, poems, novels, legends, and biographies. Written work focuses on development of ideas, organization, style, and MLA format. Students practice grade-level grammar and usage concepts through IXL.com.
The fundamental text resources used in this course are on a seventh and eighth grade reading level. Students leave this class well-prepared for high school literature and writing courses.
