In World Literature, students are challenged to analyze some of the world’s greatest writers and to think more critically and independently about literature and about themselves, the world, and their place in it. We use literature and literary analysis as a springboard for vocabulary, grammar, language usage, and a variety of writing activities. Students read and analyze a broad range of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

In this class, which builds on the foundations of English Literature and Composition I, students explore narrative devices, author’s purpose and perspective, argument and persuasion, the language of poetry, historical and cultural influences in literature, Greek tragedy, Medieval literature, Shakespearean drama, and more. Writing assignments such as literary analyses, compare-and-contrast essays, informative essays, movie scripts, and research projects challenge students to look for connections across eras and genres, expand their critical thinking and analysis skills, and explore and express their own opinions.

Students leave this class prepared for upper-level literature and writing courses. Exercises in vocabulary and language development, literature and media analysis, critical listening, and writing processes ensure they are capable of the type of analytical and writing skills required for college.
