In English Literature and Composition I, students learn about the many ways in which they can use the English language to hone their critical thinking and communication skills. We use literature and literary analysis as a springboard for vocabulary, grammar, language usage, and a variety of writing activities. Students read and analyze a broad range of fiction and nonfiction, including such classics as The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Romeo and Juliet.
We delve into narrative structure, characterization and point of view, mood and imagery, theme and symbolism, style and voice, and numerous other topics. Students express their own analyses, opinions, and voice through writing exercises including personal narratives, short stories, persuasive essays, research essays, articles, critiques, and more.
The course meets charter schools’ requirements for 9th-Grade English.
Meets 1.5 hours per week for two semesters
