In American Literature, students explore the American experience while continuing to develop their skills in critical thinking, vocabulary development, critical analysis, and writing. We study American literature from the 1600s to the present day and read and analyze a wide variety of works from the lore of Native Americans to the letters of Civil War soldiers to the tales of Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe, the books of John Steinbeck, and the poems of Emily Dickinson and Gwendolyn Brooks.

Throughout the class, students write a variety of papers, essays, and speeches drawing on works from all eras of American literature, including Early American literature, Romanticism, Realism, Regionalism, Naturalism, the Harlem Renaissance, Modernism, and Contemporary literature. Students also write a research paper on a topic of their choosing, with guidance in selecting an appropriate topic, formulating a thesis, selecting and citing credible sources, and structuring and formatting according to MLA guidelines.
