In British Literature, students explore literature from the 5^th century to the present day. Topics include specific time periods and literary movements, major writers, and key and representative works. We read epic poems, poetry, novels, short stories, and essays and  continue to develop skills and knowledge associated with good writing.  Students study principles of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure; vocabulary and word usage; analytic and interpretive methods; the writing process; the modes of writing (narration, persuasion, description, and explanation); patterns of development; and research skills. Students write a variety of papers, essays, and poetry. During the second semester, students also write a research paper on a topic of their choosing, with guidance in selecting an appropriate topic, formulating a thesis, selecting and citing credible sources, and structuring and formatting according to MLA guidelines.

Students leave this class prepared for college-level literature and writing courses. Exercises in vocabulary and language development, literature and media analysis, critical listening, and writing processes will ensure they are capable of the type of analytical and writing skills required for college.
